What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy that involves burning dried and processed mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), also known as moxa, near specific acupuncture points or areas of the body. This practice has been used for thousands of years in East Asian medicine systems, including Chinese medicine, Japanese acupuncture, and Korean traditional medicine.
Moxibustion involves burning compressed moxa indirectly either via hovering or through a physical barrier such as salt heap or piece of ginger (Deng & Shen, 2013). It is generally considered safe when administered by trained practitioners. However, it's essential to seek treatment from a qualified TCM practitioner who can determine the appropriate techniques and duration for your specific health concerns.
Some common benefits of Moxibustion include:
- Promote local circulation via warming properties: It can enhance blood flow, promoting better circulation and oxygenation of tissues (Deng & Shen, 2013).
- Calm the mind & spirit: The warming effect of moxa can induce relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety (Deadman et al., 2007).
- Benefit menstruation & fertility: It can regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual pain, and address issues like irregular periods. Also may support fertility and aid in managing conditions that affect reproductive health (Deng & Shen, 2013; “Acupuncture.Com – Sanjiaojiu,” 2015).
- Relieve pain: Moxibustion can help alleviate various types of pain, such as arthritis, muscle soreness, and menstrual cramps.
- Improve digestive health: Moxibustion may aid digestion and relieve gastrointestinal issues like bloating and constipation (“Sanjiaojiu (Ex-CA6),” 2023).
Please note that the effectiveness of moxibustion and moxa can vary from person to person, and it's essential to consult a qualified practitioner for personalized advice and treatment.
